The population of Washington, D.C. is approximately 618,000. The Washington metropolitan area (which includes the federal district along with parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia) is home to 5.5 million people. In general, the resident population is highly educated and health-conscious.

The population shifts enormously with diplomatic personnel, government employees, and other groups moving and and out of the District - or working there for finite periods.
