Local authorities
With the proximity of two states and the District, there are three local Departments of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Separate DMVs exist for Washington, D.C., for the state of Virginia, and for the State of Maryland. Most DMV offices are walk-in. No appointments are necessary.

In order to get a local license one must usually present some form of identification, proof of residence, and take some tests including eye, written, and driving tests.
