General security concerns
Sierra Leone does not ordinarily experience much civil unrest and disorder, but there is occasionally risk of rioting, particularly in central and eastern sections of Freetown. While in public, keep a low profile, and be on the alert and steer clear of any large, potentially violent, crowds. It is usually best to avoid rallies and demonstrations.
There are no known terrorist groups operating within the country, but bomb threats against Western institutions have been reported. As in most countries where there is an expatriate population, there is a risk for kidnapping in Sierra Leone. It is advisable to register with your home country's embassy or consulate on arrival.
