With the heavily urbanized city of Denver to the east and the Rocky Mountain wilderness to the west, Boulder County has a complex air quality environment. In general, air quality in Boulder is good, although the altitude means the air is thinner; this causes some people to take a few days to adjust before they feel comfortable.

Another issue with the air is the brown cloud, a haze of pollution that is most prevalent in the winter. Car emissions and other pollutants become trapped in the atmosphere – mainly above Denver, but Boulder Valley can also be affected.
